Dealing with oil on the concrete surrounding your home or workplace? A dirty driveway takes away from the curb appeal of your house or the professionalism of your company, but general purpose cleaners fail to fix the problem. Luckily, you have three ways to address oil issues to clean up concrete and other surfaces.
Clean Oil With Degreasers
Degreasers use a formula designed to break down the oil spill stuck to the concrete. You adjust the degreaser strength based on the severity of the stain and its age. If you’re cleaning your driveway for the first time in a decade, use the concentrated product. A same-day oil leak gets addressed by diluting the solvent. Rinse the degreaser with water and repeat the process until the stain lightens or lifts. You may fail to clean stubborn stains entirely with this method.
Bring out Enzyme Cleaners
Enzyme cleaners use proteins and bacteria to eat oil from the concrete. When you have unsealed concrete, the porous surface allows oil to travel deeply inside the material. The enzymes go deep into the cracks and crevices in the concrete, searching for oil. You get a deep clean but the results aren’t instantaneous. The bacteria slowly move throughout
the surface on their search rather than quickly breaking down the stain.
Use Pressure Washers to Clean Oil
Pressure washers use highly pressured water and specialty detergents to strip surfaces of the oil. You start the oil cleanup by using the soaping attachment to evenly distribute the cleaning solution to the concrete. Switch to the high-pressure nozzle once the detergent has time to set. You don’t want to use the highest setting on the pressure washer immediately since you could cause damage in weaker concrete.
Start at 3,000 PSI with a four- or five-gallon per minute setting. Increase the PSI and gallon per minute setting until you see the oil lift up. Your concrete should look freshly poured after this process.
Oil stains on concrete and other surfaces don’t have to stick around forever. These three cleaning methods allow you to tackle these problem areas. Pressure washing is the most efficient oil cleanup process and removes all trace of those frustrating stains.
